TOR Doesn't Work Out Of The Box

Just curious as to why doesn't TOR / anonymous mode work out of the box like it use to? I don't plan on doing a full install of Backbox (only using it as a live OS) But previous versions worked with the exception of the more recent versions of Backbox. Is there a way that I can get it to work out of the box? I'm thinking of just finding the last good OS that TOR worked out of the box and us it as a live OS instead.

that is fairly reasonable and logic, you need root or equivalent privileges to change mac address.
how would you expect to change the interface parameters without prvileged account?

It's not, just tested, start tor first with 'service tor start', then run anonymous, we will see on our side to add that to service settings.

That did not work. Does anyone know how to get TOR running in backbox 5.0? I thought this was suppose to work out of the box and not have to tinker with it? Why have it when it doesn't work out of the box? I can simply download it from the website and be done with it but I do like the transparency part of it but I will use previous download or maybe just download it from the tor's website.

Hey ZEROF,
Thanks for responding. Tor is already running when you start BackBox. The below if from a fresh boot:

As you can see it still doesn't work and I think I may know why. I have noticed when you start anonmyous mode, the network manager comes back up way too quickly. Perhaps if you delay that by a few seconds it will work. I am running it on VirtualBox if that makes a difference.

I know, but u have to open the terminal and do it. In backbox 4.7 work directly from the menu.

Hi,
First, update your system with
apt update && apt upgrade -y
.
I set one VM and i have only MAC address message "bug", and it took about 1min before i was connected to Tor (because network manager restart). Your output show, that Tor is not running, Mine (after less then 1min)
sudo anonymous status
gives me
Tor ON
In your Virtualbox BBox vm settings, set Network to bridge and not NAT. And try again. After checking with
https://check.torproject.org
i got what valid tor connection.

Yeah I just discovered that myself. It works but you need to leave it for a minute unlike BackBox 4.7 where it used to connect right away. I was already using Bridged Adapter, not NAT.
Also I just want to mention that when restarting network manger in general, the pop up shows "Connected" and then "Disconnected" rather than "Disconnected" and then "Connected" like BackBox 4.7. I tried it on a fresh install just in case and same issue. I hope that makes sense.

Just wondering has anyone got TOR working out of the box? I'm using a live usb and haven't been able to get it to work out of the box. So, any thoughts or ideas?

Small update, we are going to update anonymous mode when we finished testing all implemented solution. Right now there are few 'fix' i posted before, but it's not 100% solution. We will update post when good solution is out. I saw other distros who use our solution having same issue, but they didn't provided any solution. New version of network manager etc.. make some things more complicated
