Armitage and root question

I setup a normal user in Backbox and also followed the directions for setting Armitage. Armitage seems to work great, except nmap scans of course require root privileges.  Should I have set up Armitage under root? Does Armitage require root for actual exploitation? If not, I am happy with just opening a terminal and running nmap scans from there and importing nmap scans into Armitage.

What is the recommend way? Thanks!
