The repository mentioned in the title does not have a release file, am I safe just to remove it please?

I don't know where you try to grab that source, but this is how BBox source file is.

First of all it's inside /etc/apt/sources.list.d/backbox-ubuntu-five-xenial.list

And inside you need:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/backbox/five/ubuntu xenial main
# deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/backbox/five/ubuntu xenial main

That is all.
