Strange problem on a new install on a compaq evo n800v.

When i start up after boot it goes to a all white screen with nothing there. If i let the screen blank or the laptop suspend then wake it up i get the log in prompt. How ever if i log in to any account with a password the screen will ither go white again or solid black and hang there. I left it go all night last night and nothing changed. How ever i can start a guest session and get in fine. But obviously this is no good as i can not save settings etc. What im wondering is if any one has seen this. Before heading to work today i reinstalled and set my main account to auto log in.

What i want to know is if there is a way for me to for example use a blank password on my main account and all accounts via a file edit or delete. I know it is not secure if some one gets my laptop they could access every thing. But as nothing of any sensitive nature will ever be saved on this machine that is not a concern. It is also under lock and key when im not at home so the risk is limited enough that again i have no real concerns over this.

What i think is wrong is the default video driver just is not working for this laptop. It would be the proper fix. But im just looking for a work around.

Again the auto log in so long as putting it to sleep or in standby etc does let me use the live cd if auto log in or a file edit can be done to not require me to logback in / unlock the laptop this would also provide a usable fix. I have some limited experience with linux. I have played with it on and off for close to 15 years. I am how ever a beginner with linux but not with computers in general. I am a computer tech with over 20 years experience and i know about file perms and chmods for linux etc. Any how please let me know how to fix this mess.

The blank password implies that the account is simply locked for any standard POSIX.
However, you can do set a blank password with some workaround (not recommended at all)
you can do this by setting in "visudo" nopasswd option.

username ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL

then delete your password with passwd username -d

but you will still get prompted password, you will need to type enter key.
