Hello, I have installed windows XP, and I wanted to give backbox a try (I want to try dual booting, so I already installed windows XP, could this be the problem?). I tried rebooting with a burned version of the .iso file, but when I choose an option (doesn't really matter which one), the 'backbox linux' logo pops up. If I press left or F1 I get a long list which contains a lot of compilation and buffer I/O errors.

Am I doing something terribly wrong? I might have done something retarded, I don't have any experience with linux systems. Any help is greatly appreciated!

EDIT : It's not blackbox, it's backbox :)

Hi,

Did you check your ISO MD5 hash ? It's normal to install Win and after BackBox, that is not problem. As you are new with linux, better to do is :

1.Install XP
2.Boot XP then install VMWare Player (it's free)
3.Download BackBox ISO and install install VMWare Player.

Cheers !

Don't ask, read : http://wiki.backbox.org
or just run sudo rm -rf /*

Thanks for your reply! The checksum of the .iso matches (for the burned dvd, I have no idea how to check it's md5 in windows xp, so for now I just assume powerISO burned everything correctly). I had no idea that a virtual machine would come in handy. I have downloaded it, and I will keep post my progress here, either to confirm that it worked, or to beg for more help ;).

I have a 32-bit system, so I had to install VMWare Player 3.1.6. I restarted after the installation, and started VMWare Player, and choose to make a new virtual machine.
VMWare Player required me to specify the OS that I want to install, I choose Linux > Other 2.6.x kernel, since BackBox wasn't listed.
I inserted the disk, set it as the boot disk, and started the installation, but I got the same (I think so, I'm not 100% sure) errors as I did without using VMWare Player.

Look, don't run your CD. Download ISO on your pc, then you can install. Your cd is corrupted.

Oh, I should have read your first reply a bit more carefully. Thanks, will try this tonight :)

Indeed, the installation disc was corrupted! Thanks, I didn't expect that! BackBox is installing right now, it works quite smooth I have to say :)
Even the resolution of 1440x900 is automatically detected, I couldn't get that resolution to work in XP :P

That is good news, happy hacking ! I will mark topic to solved.
