USERNAME AND PASSWORD

Hello everyone.
I am new to the "Linux World" and have become very interested after seeing people in my A+Hardware/Software classes using various Linux OS's.  I have Knoppix on my old laptop and like it.
I finally chose BackBox for my home to run alongside Windows 7 in a separate partition.
My problem is that I successfully installed BackBox, turned off my computer, came back to be greeted with a login prompt even though I indicated that I wanted to sign in automatically.
Maybe I bypassed that when I entered a username and password anyway.
Nevertheless, I entered the correct username and password.  I don't have much of a security fear on this computer so I used my usual which convinces me that I know what they were.  It wasn't some hard to remember combination.
No matter how many times I enter the USERNAME and PASSWORD, I continue to be prompted for it.
What am I supposed to do, just get another Linux OS and install over it?
I'm very disillusioned.
Thank you if anyone knows how to remedy this.
Sincerely,
Whatever it was that I called myself to get on here. ;p

At login screen press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to text console #1 and check if you are able to login with your credentials.
That will tell if it's a login manager problem or a user/passwd problem.

Bye.
