is there any safe way to upgrade to latest version of bb ? or I must wipe whole hdd and install latest bb from scratch ?

not entirely sure what you mean but you can update BB from say 4.7 to 5, you definitely can, it will work but it will just mess some tools such as missing tools in the BB etc. apart from that, all should work.

i still have BB based on ubuntu 14.04 I belive it is about 1,5 year old, and I was thinking about updating to latest version
