I thought to update to Backbox 3.13 and I realized that there was some issue with Xserver. I could get past the splash but my monitor would shut off. The odd thing is that  I could still drop to a shell and reboot . Anyway, I decided to go back Backbox 13.09 and this boots up fine and installs fine,(well, I did need to reinstall grub, but no big deal) just for some reason, it hangs after logging in after the first mass update.

I am comfortable in Linux, but this is making me wonder what would cause this behaviour? I would think that it would all run and have some static problem. I have superb specs for a Linux box. Is there a solution for this? I was looking and asking the oracle (google) and I fell upon this...

Let me get logs of the last updates. I was wondering is this is ATI fglrx related. However, if that is the case, I would think that it wouldn't work at all or colours would be off(or something understandable).

Let me know please if you have a solution or have experienced this before.

Thanks.

Oh an yes, I have reinstalled as per the above link (Which I think it a terrible/give up solution for this.) and still haven't seen any changes.

Cheers!

Hi ApertureSecurity,
Firs off, i think it's not a good idea downgrading to previous BackBox versions. You shoul try to fix the current one.
Maybe it is your video card. Which one are you using?

:o omg... i won't go through all that stuff. It's really lots of updates, so it's hard to understand where it is failing.
Instead, if you can, try to look for errors at least in the files ~/.xsession-errors, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and /var/log/dmesg.
If you can spot some errors or other interesting things we will start from there.
But i would warmly suggest to install the 3.13 first.

Good luck.
Bye.

Hi ApertureSecurity,
remember that ubuntu (and then bbox) isn't a rolling release that mean that every time a new release come out you need to install it from scratch. Making upgrade you have to fix a lot of problem...
backup-format-install  this is the way!!

yeah I was just having problems with 3.13 It wouldn't even go into the live usb mode.

Anyway, I think you're right about there being something up with the video driver I am checking this out now.

I will post back when I have something.

I noticed in dmesg that FLGRX(AIT drivers) were having issues so I looked at which drivers I had loaded and I had the experimental drivers loaded. Switching to the post updates drivers has resolved this issue.
