Anyone else running Back Box as their everyday Op System?

I've been running Ubuntu 12.04LTS for about a month and I really liked it but wanted to play around with Back Box a bit too. Since I only have a 60GB hard drive I really didn't want to split it up and do a dual boot system because I've read where you can run into problems with grub when running two Linux distros so I simply installed Black Box as my Everyday Op Sys.  So, is anyone else running a PenTest Op Systems as their everyday Op Sys?

LOL, yes, I know this is the Black Box Forums but some folks may only use it for Work doing PenTesting and the like and use something else for home.  :D

How did you know that I need new glasses,LOL.  I thought it was "Black Box" as in the Black Box on an airplane or Black Hat hacking. Ok, ok, so all jump in the new kid, geeze. 
So, like I said, do a lot of folks run "BACK" Box as a day to day op sys or do they use it more for working?    Since it is a specialized version like Back Track or Kali and has tools that not everyone would use on a day to day basis.

That is up to you. I think a lot dudes use BackBox as "daily" system, and you will not have problem to update system. But for major updates it's better to reinstall system with new ISO version. If dev team make small updates you can update system with dist-upgrade command but as any other system if you want to move to new core without issues it's better to have fresh install.

i did run bbx for few months as main OS; No major issues thereof.

But, as ZEROF already pointed out, when it was time of major/important updates I had few hitches, and now I am still a happy bbx customer, but running it on VM.

I've been using Backbox Linux 2.x and 3 on my laptop a lot, especially because I almost didn't have to install any additional tooling :)

Main reason why I ask was because on a recent episode of HAK5 they were talking about how Back Track 5 wasn't meant to be used as an everyday Op System. They were also talking about Kali Linux(BT5's successor) and how it had a lot of specialized tools and stuff.  I just wonder if Back Box was kind of the same where it's more of a specialized Op System for "Work" more then for everyday use like Ubuntu 12.04LTS or Linux Mint 13 would be.

BackBox Linux is a security testing toolkit that I use for security auditing and network troubleshooting purposes. There are some other distro's that I've tried but BackBox Linux is the best if all you need is a security toolkit with an Ubuntu-like user experience (not a LiveCD experience) and some nice updating features.

I have been running my customized version of Backbox as my main OS for months now,, ever since 3.05 came out.. No major issues and I love it!!

Care to share some of those customized options? I too will use BackBox Linux as my main OS. I really get bored with Live USB Sticks, and Virtualization. LOL!

the updated version is known as THS-OSv3.2 and you will need to become a paid member to find it.


keep in mind though that it is not going to be supported by backbox and please don't bother these guys with questions or troubleshooting.

I use backbox as an "every day" desktop in the sense that it is all I use on one of my machines. I have an older machine that I use as a server, among other things, and I've found that backbox is a perfect match for that machine. Puppy Linux would be the most ideal for an old machine that is low on resources. But once I take into account the true niche backbox was designed for and all of the server utilities is has "pre stocked", its a good choice for me. Honestly, pen test distro or not, if the OS is suitable for HDD install and doesn't run on root account by default, it can be made into an "every day" desktop.
